Then there are the puzzles which range wildly in difficulty, but many of which can be extremely difficult due to the lackluster tutorial. Because Lara will need specific key items to progress through the levels, it also leads to a lot of backtracking if players don't search every inch of the areas they run through, and since the game doesn't nudge the player in the right direction, it's all too easy to spend hours looking for a single key. The difficult combat has returned from the previous games, but this time, enemies are much more tanky and will take a lot of rounds until they're finally down for good. The controls in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation and Lara's movement felt a lot better than in previous games, but the difficulty in virtually all areas was ramped up to make for one of the most challenging experiences in the series. This is just one of many scenarios where the game can test the player's patience, but for anyone curious about trying this rather divisive game out, it's still worth it for the things that it does well. An example of this is The Hall of Seasons where Lara must pull multiple levers to advance while undead knights with flaming swords charge towards her and will burn her with a single hit, which she must then run over to a pool of water to get rid of. Sometimes, these combat arenas are even mixed with light puzzles which in theory shouldn't be that difficult, but the controls and camera, which often seem to have a mind of its own, make this much harder than it needs to be. ![]() The gameplay can end up becoming a little frustrating though, especially since the game loves throwing multiple enemies towards Lara at once who are usually very fast and hard to dodge, which can quickly lead to a game over screen. Angel of Darkness isn't exactly one of the most popular games in the series, primarily because the controls felt very clunky and unresponsive for a 2003 game, but there are still many areas where it shines, including the music and story.
